Northumberland's new super council is preparing to start spending £2.7m of Government funding on "pump priming" key sites earmarked for a major housing-led regeneration programme.

South East Northumberland was designated an official Growth Point a year ago as part of a Government initiative involving 6,300 new homes in the county by 2017.

Blyth Estuary, the Ellington/Lynemouth area, the former St George's Hospital in Morpeth, Cambois, East Ashington and south west Cramlington have been earmarked as the six areas to benefit from the programme, which aims to deliver regeneration and increased affordable housing.

Disabled riders get £1.2m base

Work is under way on an exciting equestrian project at Tranwell near Morpeth.

Chester-le-Street contract winner Northern Construction Solutions has started work on the £1.2m Pegasus Riding Centre for disabled people, the first of its kind in Northumberland, hoped to be ready in four months.

Project manager Blyth Valley Arts and Leisure Trust feels such a centre is essential in the county. Northumberland County Council head of regeneration Andy Dean said: "This fantastic RDA [Riding for the Disabled Association] facility has brought together so many people from a variety of organisations all with the same aim - to provide a first class facility for young people and adults in the Northumberland area."

Campaign over Morpeth accident blackspot

A woman whose home was damaged when a van crashed into it has launched a campaign for safety measures on the road outside.

Maureen Davison, pictured, 51, of Pottery Bank Court, Morpeth, says the bend which runs past her three-storey townhouse is an accident blackspot.

She had a lucky escape on Tuesday when the van ploughed into her house and her gas mains supply.

Boat stolen from Coopies Lane

An inflatable boat was stolen from a yard in Morpeth.

Police were called to Captain's Locker, on Coopies Lane, after a red Zodiac Futora inflatable boat was taken between 12.40am and 8.45am on Thursday, June 25. An out boat motor was also stolen.

A school in Morpeth was yesterday handed two awards in the third North East Schools Awards.

All Saints First School won the Active Community Award and Amanda Mitchell from the school took the award for Inspirational Primary School Teacher.

The ceremony was staged yesterday at the Centre for Life, in Newcastle.

Showcasing their talents, Northumbrian schoolchildren have seven days to shine in a jam-packed series of events.

Students at The King Edward VI School in Morpeth are taking part in Shine Week, an event to highlight how every pupil has an individual talent.

The week is designed to celebrate everything from success in the performing arts through to skills in science, technology and working in the community.

A fertility drink for couples proved an award winner for student Lindsey Whittle.

Lindsey, who graduates this summer in graphic design at Northumbria University, impressed the judges of a competition to design a new drinks concept and brand.

The 22-year-old, of Morpeth, came up with the concept and packaging for a drinks range aimed at couples who want to increase their chances of pregnancy.

Carlisle Park MorpethMorpeth's Carlisle Park has secured a coveted national award for the outstanding experience it offers to visitors, for the eighth successive year.

The riverside park has been given Quality Assured Visitor Attraction status by the Enjoy England tourist board after being assessed by inspectors. It has won QAVA every year since 2002.

2,000 female workers set for payout

More than 2,000 female council workers in Northumberland are set for payouts after agreement was finally reached to settle a long-running, £50m equal pay claim.

Women county council employees such as cleaners, kitchen assistants and carers are in line for the compensation payments as a result of being underpaid for years in comparison to male colleagues who earned bonuses.

Northumberland County Council is the last local authority in the North East to settle its equal pay dispute with the GMB and Unison - and defended its case as far as an Employment Tribunal scheduled for earlier this month.
