Two people are fighting for their lives in hospital after a four vehicle pile-up in Northumberland.
The accident, which involved a BMW, Citroen Saxo, Honda Civic and Vauxhall Corsa, happened at 10.20pm on Thursday on the Pegswood stretch of the A197 between Longhurst and Sheepwash, near Morpeth.
A VITAL flood defence scheme to protect Morpeth from a repeat of the recent catastrophic flooding could be completed within three years, it was said yesterday.

Hopes are rising that the town's £13m flood alleviation scheme - originally due by 2014 - could be completed more than two years ahead of schedule, in late 2011.
Two men are fighting for their lives this morning following a four-vehicle smash in Northumberland.
Five people were injured in the collision, which left the two men seriously hurt, on the A197 at Pegswood at around 8.20pm last night.
The road was closed for six hours while police carried out investigations.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said officers were still investigating the cause of the crash, which was not believed to be weather-related.
Despite having Mark Grant sent off in the 22nd minute, Morpeth Town were still good enough to win 2-1 at Bishop Auckland for whom Lewis Hardman, on loan from Darlington, struck.
Gary Anderson (og) and Alex Benjamin netted for Morpeth, who are currently lying 9th in the Northern League.
Young people are being targeting in a hard-hitting campaign to reduce the number of bonfire and firework-related injuries across Northumberland.

Fireworks injure almost 1000 children in the North of England every year, often resulting in permanent scarring or disfiguration. Now Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service is warning pupils in secondary schools about the dangers in a programme of educational visits.
WOMEN'S Institute members in Hepscott near Morpeth are planting spring bulbs near the village entrance following recent flood damage, and to help mark the 90th anniversary of the WI movement.
The Hepscott branch, which was relaunched last year, meets in the parish hall on the third Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm and welcomes new members.
Landmark locations will be seen in a new light this winter with the return of a hugely popular winter festival. Northumberland Lights - and the award-winning team behind it - are back with more bright ideas for outdoor illuminations.
From November 2 to 30, the winter festival will bathe some of the most beautiful and remote spots from Blyth to the Borders in an array of colour, in celebration of the county's contrasting architectural and natural environment.
FREE bus transport for older students is set to leave Northumberland County Council with a £500,000 bill. But councillors last night hailed the scheme to provide passes for A-level and college students as a massive success - and said it was likely to cost much less than feared.
The free pass has seen the number of teenagers using buses more than double, from 800 in July to 1,850 now. The county council took the decision to scrap fares after they rose to £360 a year under the previous Labour administration.
After a disappointing result the week before, Morpeth needed a strong result against a Norton team which they knew little about.
Morpeth started well against a strong Norton side, both sides seeing numerous attacks squandered. More pressure by Morpeth saw them have a goal disallowed after S Mintos shot was deemed to be outside the area.
Norton pressed on but after some good defensive work the Morpeth back line broke down a Norton attack for P Danecki to drive up the pitch with the ball. He found R Page to get a strong shot away only for the ball to be deflected up into the air for a defender to stop at the line.
PUPILS at schools in Morpeth are getting lessons on how to turn junk into useful items ahead of a recycling rally to be held in the town next month.
With the help of artists, musicians, dancers and fashion designers, youngsters at eight schools are finding out how household rubbish can be given a new lease of life.
At a series of workshops they are making everything from plastic flowers and cardboard vases to fashionable clothes and musical instruments.
