Hopes are rising that the town's £13m flood alleviation scheme - originally due by 2014 - could be completed more than two years ahead of schedule, in late 2011.

Five people were injured in the collision, which left the two men seriously hurt, on the A197 at Pegswood at around 8.20pm last night.

The road was closed for six hours while police carried out investigations.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said officers were still investigating the cause of the crash, which was not believed to be weather-related.

From November 2 to 30, the winter festival will bathe some of the most beautiful and remote spots from Blyth to the Borders in an array of colour, in celebration of the county's contrasting architectural and natural environment.

FREE bus transport for older students is set to leave Northumberland County Council with a £500,000 bill. But councillors last night hailed the scheme to provide passes for A-level and college students as a massive success - and said it was likely to cost much less than feared.

The free pass has seen the number of teenagers using buses more than double, from 800 in July to 1,850 now. The county council took the decision to scrap fares after they rose to £360 a year under the previous Labour administration.

Morpeth hockey team action

After a disappointing result the week before, Morpeth needed a strong result against a Norton team which they knew little about.

Morpeth started well against a strong Norton side, both sides seeing numerous attacks squandered. More pressure by Morpeth saw them have a goal disallowed after S Mintos shot was deemed to be outside the area.

Norton pressed on but after some good defensive work the Morpeth back line broke down a Norton attack for P Danecki to drive up the pitch with the ball. He found R Page to get a strong shot away only for the ball to be deflected up into the air for a defender to stop at the line.
