Morpeth targeted in night crime crackdown

Posted by The Journal on Nov 18, 08 12:00 PM in News

Scores of vehicles were stopped and 14 people arrested during a Northumbria Police operation over the weekend to clamp down on night time crime.

Operation Culford, which is running every weekend in Northumberland from now until after Christmas, is the latest initiative in a six-month campaign to drive down crime levels across the county.

Designed to combat violence, criminal damage and disorder, the operation combines extra officers on the ground checking pubs and clubs and nipping any problems in the bud, while motor patrols staff work to prevent criminals using the roads.

Areas covered this weekend were Hexham, Haltwhistle and Prudhoe, along with Blyth, Ashington and Morpeth.

A total of 117 vehicles were stopped and 14 people arrested for a variety of offences including drink driving, violent disorder and aggravated vehicle taking.

Area Commander Chief Supt Kevin Lambert said: "The aims of Operation Culford are to reassure people they can come out and have a safe and trouble-free night out and to deter those who may be trying to use the cover of darkness to commit crime."
