Sir Bobby voted top Northumbrian

World Cup winner Sir Bobby Charlton has been voted the Greatest Living Northumbrian in a poll on the Your Place microsites.

The Ashington-born footballer won 27% of the votes, beating actor Robson Green (17%) and comedian Ross Noble (15%).

Other nominees in the poll were Sir Bobby's brother Jack, musician Kathryn Tickell, cricketer Steve Harmison, the Duchess of Northumberland and darts commentator Sid Waddell.

Castle Morpeth Council is bowing out amid glowing praise from town hall watchdogs for making major improvements in its performance.

The independent Audit Commission says the Northumberland rural council has gone from being officially rated as weak in 2003/4 to becoming a good authority with an ambitious programme of further improvement.

Morpeth Lions raised more than £300 for local good causes at a special whisky evening where those present were asked to sample five different malts.

The cash was raised by raffling what remained in the bottles after their contents had been tasted at the event, organised by Lion Dave Wheeler.

Morpeth in Bloom 2008Morpeth has been chosen to represent Northumbria in the town category of the Royal Horticultural Society's Britain in Bloom UK Finals.

In all there will be 67 finalists which will be judged over the summer months in the hope of winning either a gold, silver gilt, silver or bronze medal at the awards ceremony in September.

Historic landmarks and local attractions in Morpeth are to be made more accessible to residents and visitors in a new heritage information project launched by a regeneration group.

The first in a network of new signs and interpretation boards highlighting the market town's hidden treasures will be going up around the town in a few weeks' time.

Morpeth flood action group wants answers

The group set up to respond to last year's Morpeth floods say they have more questions for officials in the aftermath of the deluge.

The Morpeth Flood Action Group (MFAG) submitted seven questions to the Environment Agency about procedures in the September 6 deluge.

But while the group has received a quick response, members say it is not entirely satisfactory and are eager to raise more points with officials at a future meeting.

Mast paves the way for Netherwitton wind farm

A company seeking to build a wind farm in Northumberland has been given the go-ahead to erect a monitoring mast - but it must be lit.

Novera Energy is on the brink of submitting plans to erect six turbines at Coatyards, Netherwitton.

The company also recently sought planning permission from Alnwick District Council to erect a 70m meteorological mast at the site to gather data for three years.

Consett's lead at the top of the Skilltrainingltd Northern League First Division was trimmed to a single point in last night's busy programme.

Carl Piecha headed the Steelmen in front at Morpeth before Ian Nickalls equalised from 12 yards.

Festival of sport heads to Morpeth

The final Castle Morpeth festival of sport will start on March 15 with events in Morpeth, Ponteland, Broomhill and Red Row.

Local sports clubs and schools will compete and there will be a chance for people to get involved in kayaking, orienteering, swimming and hockey. There will also be a Young At Heart event at Ponteland Leisure Centre on March 18 for people aged over 50
