Housing company to create jobs in Morpeth

The company, which is part of Milecastle Housing in Hexham, handles repairs for homes in Tynedale and Castle Morpeth. It is expanding its work for housing group NomadE5 and expanding its number of employees from 62 to 82.

The staff will work out of three main depots in Hexham, Morpeth, and a new site on Tyneside. Management and administration of the business will remain based in Hexham.

You've picked Northumberland's top castle and its top beauty spot, but now we're asking you for your views on the county's best building.

buildingsmontage.jpgOur choice of 12 impressive structures ranges from the Royal Border Bridge in the north to Seaton Delaval Hall in the south, from the 12th century Hexham Abbey to modern buildings like Woodhorn and Alnwick Treehouse.

You can also pick from Morpeth Chantry, Howick Hall, Belsay Hall, Wallington, Brinkburn Priory, Cragside or Biddlestone Chapel - or add your own choice if we've missed it.

You can vote by clicking your choice on the Local Poll section at the bottom of this home page. The voting will be open for the next two weeks, with the winner announced on April 10.

Morpeth Library reopened after flooding yesterday with a new look. The Duchess of Northumberland was there for the cutting of the tape, along with children from the local area.

A new chapter at Morpeth Library

The Duchess of Northumberland praised a fantastic team effort at the reopening of the county's main library less than seven months after flooding devastation.

The Duchess said Morpeth's Central Library said users could now enjoy improved and modernised facilities - including special areas aimed at attracting more young readers.

The building - which is the administrative hub of the county service and also hosts the acclaimed Northern Poetry Library - was left under five feet of water when the nearby River Wansbeck burst its banks in September.

Next date for Morpeth Farmers' Market

A farmers' market will take place in Morpeth market place on Saturday April 4.

Real Easter eggs - free range hen, duck, guinea fowl and goose eggs - will be among the produce on offer.

The market will run from 9am until lunchtime.

Morpeth welcomes springtime with ice festival

Spring might be arriving but Morpeth turned the clocks back to winter as it hosted a spectacular ice festival.

A 400sqm skating rink and a 47ft high toboggan slide were installed in Morpeth's Carlisle Park to bring a touch of winter sports to the three-day festival.

College students are holding a special dance event in memory of a popular teenager who died last year after battling leukaemia and a rare blood disease.

Sports science student Danny Petini, 18, passed away on New Year's Day 2008 surrounded by his family at his home in Hepscott Park near Morpeth.

He had been diagnosed with leukaemia some months earlier but had also contracted Haemophagocytic syndrome, a rare and little understood blood disorder.

Morpeth hockey win at Hartlepool

An extremely windy day down in Hartlepool meant that Morpeth would have to up their game if they were to get anything out of it.

The game got underway at a rather frantic pace as both teams looked to retain possession inside one another's half but struggled in the wintry conditions.

For the first 15 minutes, Morpeth looked very suspect with their sloppy and inconsistent passing, which allowed Hartlepool in and around the Morpeth 'D'.

The Traveller's Rest in Choppington overcame a tricky away game at Pegswood Ex-Services to maintain the pace at the top of Division One.

Goals from David John Kilpatrick (2) and Dale Wilkinson earned them a 3-2 win, with Carl Sanders and Matthew Cummins getting on the scoresheet for the hosts.

Lynemouth keep snapping at their heels, however, after comprehensively beating Ashington Booze Brothers 8-1.
