Motorcyclist fights for life after Morpeth crash
A motorcyclist is fighting for his life today after his bike crashed into a car.
The accident happened on the A697, near Morpeth, when a black Suzuki motorcycle and a silver Ford Mondeo collided at 3.45pm yesterday.
Police and paramedics were called and the drivers of both vehicles - both men- were taken to Wansbeck District Hospital, where the motorcyclist has "life threatening" injuries.
The driver of the Ford Mondeo suffered head injuries in the crash, which happened two miles north of the Heighley Gate Garden Centre.
Diversions were put in place and drivers reported delays running into the evening. No details of the victims' identities were revealed yesterday as officers made efforts to inform their families.
The accident comes after police launched a fresh campaign to encourage bikers to ride safely earlier this month.
The A697 becomes a popular route for bikers, but already this year two motorcyclists have lost their lives on the roads of Northumberland.
Last year, 100 riders were killed or seriously injured in crashes in the region. Northumbria Police's Operation Weekender will see police taking to the roads in an attempt to meet bikers.
