Families in a tiny rural hamlet left without safe drinking water for weeks have had their hopes of an early solution dashed.
A handful of households at North Whitehouse near Stannington, have had to boil their water for the last three weeks because of a contamination problem in the antiquated supply system.

Pipework connecting the homes is believed to be 100 years old, and its condition caused residents to lose their water supply for two days at Christmas 2007.

An elderly woman chased off three burglars when she woke from her afternoon nap to find them in her house.
The 84-year-old sprang from her bed and chased them from her home before they had a chance to take any of her belongings. Police are now hunting the trio who sneaked into the house in Morpeth, Northumberland, in daylight.
