Pegasus Riding Centre officially opened

Riders are saddling up for the first time at a flagship £1.2m equestrian centre for disabled people in Northumberland.

The Pegasus Centre for Excellence in Disabled Riding is one of the major legacy projects of Castle Morpeth Borough Council, which was abolished in April.

Yesterday the centre, developed at existing stables in Tranwell near Morpeth, was officially launched at a ceremony attended by civic leaders.

Morpeth Sporting Club have emerged as the Northern Alliance Division One dark horses this season, and winning six games in a row has taken them up into fourth place.

They continued their progress with a 2-1 victory at Hebburn Reyrolle after being presented with an early own-goal opener by the Hebburn keeper.

Ray Oshin levelled on the hour for Reyrolle, but with six minutes to go Richard Latimer weighed in with Morpeth's winner.

Late goal not enough for Morpeth Town

Tony Stephenson hit the net twice for South Shields in their Northern League victory over Morpeth Town last night. Carl Thorpe scored late on for Morpeth.

Elsewhere, Tow Law Town bounced back to form with at Ashington, who would have been fourth top had they won, and Whitley Bay surged to the top of the First Division with a superb performance against Billingham.

Morpeth Theatre Group auditions

A theatre group in Northumberland is holding auditions to cast for their next show.

The Morpeth Theatre Group is searching for people to star in their 31st pantomime, Babes in the Wood.

Auditions will be held at King Edward VI, in Morpeth, on Monday 5 and Tuesday 6 October, starting at 7pm.

A community service group which spearheaded the massive relief effort in the wake of last year's devastating Morpeth floods has been put forward for a royal honour.

Morpeth Lions Club - which was at the forefront of grassroots aid and recovery work following September's catastrophe in the Northumberland town - has been nominated for the prestigious Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.

The honour, which is the equivalent of an MBE and sets the national benchmark for excellence in volunteering, is given for outstanding service to the community by voluntary groups or organisations.

Northumberland poet Pippa LittleA North East poet is set to regale library users with lines from her new collection.

Pippa Little will wax lyrical about her exploration of the women Border Reivers at Morpeth Library.

The venue is showcasing a series of events with some of the region's most exciting up and coming poets, as well as boosting local publishers.

Modern matrons improving hospital standards

Morpeth matron Aileen Beatty with patient Dorothy HillNorthumbria Healthcare is celebrating the first birthday of modern matrons continuing to drive up standards in all its hospitals across Northumberland and North Tyneside.

Over the past twelve months the 31 highly skilled matrons have been ensuring patients receive first-class nursing care.

They are present in the Trust's three general and seven community hospitals seven-days-a week, supporting ward staff, relatives and carers, making sure they receive the advice, assistance and support they need.

Morpeth miss out on podium in last 100m

Good fortune didn't go Morpeth's way in the men's six-stage contest at Leeds Met Carnegie.

Winners of the title from 2004 to 2006 and third last year when the championships were held in Hartlepool, the Northumbrians were run out of a podium place in the last 100 metres despite a heroic effort by Chris Sampson on the final 3.8-mile leg.

Nathan Shrubb gave Morpeth a solid base by finishing seventh at the conclusion of the first stage as Sunderland led through Patrick Martin.

Morpeth Town claim first win of the season

Morpeth Town recorded their first win in the Skilltraining Northern League this weekend when Marc Walton (pen) and Shaun Sweeney (2) netted at West Auckland Town.

Penrith are the new leaders in Division One following their win at Esh Winning, but are being hotly pursued by Whitley Bay, who preserved the only 100% record with victory over neighbours Ashington.

Morpeth traders slam Wansbeck MP on parking

Traders in Morpeth have started in an angry war of words with their local MP over his stance on the thorny issue of car parking charges in Northumberland.

Morpeth Chamber of Trade says it is disappointed that Wansbeck MP Denis Murphy will not support its campaign to end the current two-tier system of charging in his own constituency.

They have accused him of "political point scoring" rather than ensuring a fair deal for all of the communities which he represents.
