New car park proposed for Dark Lane

A NEW 137-space car park could be developed in Morpeth to help meet increased demand following next month's opening of the town's £32m shopping centre at Sanderson Arcade.

Developer Dransfield Properties is looking at a council depot in Dark Lane as a potential long-stay car park, as well as plans for a park-and-ride scheme to reduce the number of cars coming into the town centre.

Morpeth Sporting Club draw in thrilling game

Two up-and-coming sides - Morpeth Sporting Club and Cullercoats - drew 3-3 at Morpeth in a real thriller in the Northern Alliance Division One.

The home side had Michael Dixon banging in all three of their goals while Cullercoats earned their share of the spoils with strikes by Ben Gardner (2) and Stewart Wright.

Heavy rain and strong winds welcomed in the cross-country season as Gateshead and Morpeth retained their Sherman Cup and Davison Shield trophies respectively at Temple Park, South Shields.

However, the adverse conditions didn't deter athletes as they turned out in record numbers for the curtain-raiser to the Start Fitness North Eastern Athletics League.

Diesel theft at Morpeth Morrisons

Thieves stole diesel worth £100 from Morpeth town centre.

A fuel container at the back of the Morrisons supermarket car park was forced open and the fuel was taken between 5.45pm on October 15, and 8am on October 16.

A flagship £32m retail development in Morpeth has bucked the recession as it is now virtually full.

The Sanderson Arcade scheme - which includes a 27-unit, Edwardian-style shopping mall and piazza in the town centre - is 95% occupied after a recent flurry of new lettings.

Four more businesses have signed up to take units in the arcade, and trade alongside leading high street names such as Marks & Spencer, New Look and Waterstone's.

Northumberland hospital plans get green light

Health care chiefs have given the go ahead for a £200m investment in services in Northumberland, including a new emergency care hospital on the outskirts of Cramlington.

Wansbeck and North Tyneside hospitals will see significant investment while community hospitals in Berwick and Haltwhistle will be rebuilt.

The package of measures was approved yesterday at a meeting of the NHS North of Tyne Trust.

Town councillors in Morpeth are urging the Environment Agency to ensure that a vital flood protection scheme remains on schedule.

The Agency announced recently that planning work on the town's £15m flood alleviation scheme has slipped back several months to allow a full business case to be developed.

Morpeth County Hall war memorial to be moved

A war memorial in Northumberland is to be moved to a new location to allow more people to pay their respects to those lost in conflicts.

The memorial outside County Hall in Morpeth, which honours those associated with the county council who fell in two world wars, is being moved to a more accessible site.

It will be formally dedicated in its new location at the front of the building during the first public service there on Wednesday November 11.

Caroline Dickinson of AlnwickThe daughter of a Northumberland headteacher who has lost her battle with cancer last night paid tribute to her inspirational mother.

Caroline Dickinson, 54, of Alnwick died at St Oswald's Hospice in Newcastle on Sunday following an 16-month fight against Lymphoma Non-Hodgkins.

Mrs Dickinson, who was headteacher at Ellingham First School for eight years and briefly at Morpeth's All Saints First, was diagnosed with the disease in June 2008 and stopped working.

Morpeth Sporting Club out of league cup

Morpeth Sporting Club were knocked out of the Northern Alliance Kicks Leisure League Cup at the weekend.

Newcastle University progressed by winning 5-2 at Cochrane Park, where Dave Kewn slotted in four of their total. The fifth was claimed by Edwin Tizard and Morpeth's replies came from Paul Bullock and Michael Dixon.

Wallington were among the Division One sides to make it through to the next round.
