Young Morpeth chef to compete in cook-off
A teenager has been selected to take part in the regional final of a national cookery competition for budding young chefs.
Edward Matthew, 13, from King Edward VI School in Morpeth will compete in a cook-off against other students at Harrogate College on December 1.
He will battle for the regional title of the quality standard beef and lamb Young Chef Challenge and to win prizes, such as professional chef whites and £200 of school kitchen equipment vouchers.
Celebrity chef James Martin, star of Saturday Kitchen, will judge the competition.
He said: "The challenge is an excellent way of encouraging students to take an interest in their food. It is important to inspire them to eat healthy and encourage skills that can help them in later life.
"When they are engaged in cooking they really come out of their shell and produce some fabulous dishes. Last year's winners really blew me away and I'm looking forward to seeing the level and quality of the students this year."
If Edward can make it through the heat, he will be given the opportunity to battle it out with five other regional final winners to be crowned the National Young Chef Champion, and win a dinner with James Martin in a Michelin star restaurant.
