A river runs through it

During a recent fishing in the Coquet Valley, a question crossed my mind as to what drives people to take up fishing as a past time. For many, the pursuit of brown trout can influence every aspect of their ever day life, defining how lives are led rather than simply being a part time hobby. (read more below)

Hopefully the chilled grips of winter are now behind us, and the first shoots of green are becoming more abundant with signs of new life springing up all around us. The hibernating fly fishers are also becoming restless to set foot onto the banks of our north-east rivers, as the brown trout season gets underway on the 22nd March.

Despite difficult conditions at times, the opinion amongst many anglers is that this year has been one of the more productive game fishing seasons on the River Coquet in Northumberland.....(read more below)

It's a widely held belief that as we become more wrapped up in the pressures of everyday life, we are becoming increasingly out of touch with natural world around us. We are fortunate in Northumberland, that many of our rivers and streams offer safe havens for our indigenous flora and fauna.

As spring slowly moves into early summer, much of our broadleaf woodland in Northumberland puts on a fine display of Common Bluebells at this time of year. It is estimated that over 70% of the worlds Common Bluebells are in the United Kingdom.

With the winter that we have just experienced being one of the coldest in over 30 years, there were times when some of us were wondering if summer would ever return to this land. In the last few weeks however, as spring gives way to early summer, there are signs of rejuvenation all over Northumberland.

Now is a great time of year to take a trip up the Northumbrian Coast and visit Holy Island. When the tides allow, thousands of visitors flock to the Island every year to visit this natural wonder and make the short walk up to Lindisfarne Castle or the world famous Priory.
