Kenneth Irvine of St George's United Reformed Church has a round-up of events taking place there in the next couple of months:

St George's United Reformed Church has something for everyone this Autumn as it swings back into action with a full programme of events following its refurbishment after last year's flooding.

The ever popular Northumbrian Ranters, a group of 40 plus young people from throughout the County and based at Morpeth, will begin the season with a concert this Saturday 12th September at 7.00pm.

A year has now elapsed since over 900 Morpeth homes and many businesses were devastated by flooding from the River Wansbeck. This was the result of torrential rain over a two day period, the like of which had not been experienced in living history.

The Emergency Services quickly sprang into action to assist affected people to safety and to do whatever was possible to reduce the effects of the downpour.

The day after the full extent of the floods and its effects became obvious, local voluntary organisations lead by Morpeth Lions Club came together to see what could be done collectively.

We have a number of day centres, lunch clubs, men's groups, enabling service, meals on wheels and an allotment project, which are supported by volunteers, without the help and support of our volunteers, the services we provide would be limited or would not exist in some areas. However, in order to continue providing and developing our day services we need your help - as a volunteer!

For someone attending day services, the benefits are considerable; it allows them to chance to catch up with friends, have a hot meal and access new activities such as chair based exercise, carpet bowls and indoor golf, more importantly, it enables them to maintain a level of independence. Quote from a lunch club service user "It gives a reason to go out and provides a good meal, the company of friends as I live on my own, cheers me up a lot."

So if are able to spare a few hours to volunteer for any of our day services or would like to know more about volunteering for Age Concern Northumberland, call 0845 140 0088 to speak with our Resourcing & Volunteers Manager or email:

Robert WilliamsRobert Williams, a year 13 student at The King Edward VI School has raised yet further money for Alzheimers.

Last year he approached the School Council to organise a non-uniform day for Alzheimers, as his Gran suffers from the disease, and students fully supported the cause, raising £400 for the Morpeth branch of Alzheimers which was awarded last week to the society in a cheque from the School Council.

In addition to Robert's fundraising at school, he also ran a half-marathon in Stafford (pictured), and he has raised a further £226.00 for the charity.

The school and Robert's family are very proud of him, and he is to be highly commended for his efforts.

On Tuesday 16th June, The King Edward VI School were victorious against Ponteland in the Morpeth and Ponteland School Sports Partnership Golf Tournament at Longhirst.

The winning team from The King Edward VI School in the High School event were Fred Chambers, Alastair Bailey, Lewis Reeves and Thomas Robinson, retaining the trophy after also having won this event last year.

It was a great day for Fred Chambers who won the best individual gross score with 70-7-63. His prize was a year's membership at Longhirst Golf Club.

Fred plays for Morpeth Golf Club and his ambition to gain a golfing scholarship in America.
