Plenty more work taking place a year on from floods

A year has now elapsed since over 900 Morpeth homes and many businesses were devastated by flooding from the River Wansbeck. This was the result of torrential rain over a two day period, the like of which had not been experienced in living history.

The Emergency Services quickly sprang into action to assist affected people to safety and to do whatever was possible to reduce the effects of the downpour.

The day after the full extent of the floods and its effects became obvious, local voluntary organisations lead by Morpeth Lions Club came together to see what could be done collectively.

Ever thought of volunteering?

We have a number of day centres, lunch clubs, men's groups, enabling service, meals on wheels and an allotment project, which are supported by volunteers, without the help and support of our volunteers, the services we provide would be limited or would not exist in some areas. However, in order to continue providing and developing our day services we need your help - as a volunteer!

For someone attending day services, the benefits are considerable; it allows them to chance to catch up with friends, have a hot meal and access new activities such as chair based exercise, carpet bowls and indoor golf, more importantly, it enables them to maintain a level of independence. Quote from a lunch club service user "It gives a reason to go out and provides a good meal, the company of friends as I live on my own, cheers me up a lot."

So if are able to spare a few hours to volunteer for any of our day services or would like to know more about volunteering for Age Concern Northumberland, call 0845 140 0088 to speak with our Resourcing & Volunteers Manager or email:

Last year he approached the School Council to organise a non-uniform day for Alzheimers, as his Gran suffers from the disease, and students fully supported the cause, raising £400 for the Morpeth branch of Alzheimers which was awarded last week to the society in a cheque from the School Council.

In addition to Robert's fundraising at school, he also ran a half-marathon in Stafford (pictured), and he has raised a further £226.00 for the charity.

The school and Robert's family are very proud of him, and he is to be highly commended for his efforts.

Flood victims knew they would get a great welcome from Elphin Conroy when they visited the former undertaker's offices in Oldgate during the first few weeks after the floods. It was here that they could collect cleaning materials and smaller household items, clothes and furnishings.

When all these items were amalgamated at the Pegswood Furniture store Elphin and her husband Jake were able to reclaim the premises -- but not for long.

During the past week the office space used by British Red Cross plus Rhona Dunn and Elphin at FirstCall Castle Morpeth has had to be vacated is in preparation for the creation of Northumberland's Single Unitary Authority when the extra space will be needed by the council.

Mike Memphis and the Memphis Belles donated 20 tickets to their recent party night held at the Comrades Club.

This talented Elvis impersonator entertained an enthusiastic audience and allowed a raffle to be organised in aid of the Flood Victims Appeal. As a result, Morpeth Lions Club President Graham Tait was delighted to receive a cheque for £200.

Mike Memphis said: "In common with the whole of the North East I was appalled to see on television the destruction the floods caused. I hope that my contribution will assist those affected to get back to normal."

Homeowners encouraged to ask for what they need

With flood victims starting to move back into their homes, the organisations involved with Morpeth Flood Victims Appeal recently met to discuss how best to cater for future needs. Discussions have also taken place with flood victims to identify the priorities.

While the appeal fund still has a substantial balance there is a great realisation that fairness must prevail.

Letters are now being sent asking that as people are given dates for returning to their houses or re-inhabiting previously flooded areas of their property they contact British Red Cross on 07623 912340 or 01670 535000.

Lunchtime concerts begin

The winter-spring series of lunchtime concerts got off to a colourful start when recorder group Muzicanti provided 'An Entertainment of Tudor Music' in traditional clothing.

These long established concerts are usually held at St George's URC, but due to the flood damage at that church this concert was held in Morpeth Methodist Church. It is likely that at least the next concert will also be held there.

Pupils from Morpeth All Saints First and Chantry Middle schools attended this latest concert as many of them play the recorder. This was an ideal opportunity to hear experts and to question them about the forerunners of the modern instrument.

Morpeth Lions flood relief update

Although over four months has elapsed since the flooding took place, local residents are still being newly affected by it.

One couple had managed to stay in their rented, furnished accommodation until recently. Their landlord is now in a position to attend to the flood damage and they have been obliged to seek an alternative property.

Whilst they have managed to secure an unfurnished cottage a little distance outside Morpeth, they were faced with the problem of having very little in the way of furniture and furnishings. At this point Rhona Dunn came to the rescue and was able to provide sufficient items for their immediate needs from the Morpeth Rotary Club furniture store at Pegswood.
