Last service for Morpeth minister

A Morpeth minister will take his last official service in the town this weekend.
The Rev Keith Harbour (pictured) has served at the Methodist Church in Howard Terrace for the past nine years.

In that time the church building has been transformed from a traditional interior to provide community-based facilities which have proved very popular with local groups.

His final service on Sunday will be followed by a farewell lunch in the church hall. Mr Harbour's successor will be the Rev Paul Cleever Thorpe.

Landmark Oldgate tree has to go

Churchgoers and school pupils are preparing to say goodbye to an old friend - a large tree which has been an imposing local landmark for generations.

The impressive copper beech has stood in the grounds of St Robert's Roman Catholic Church and the adjacent first school of the same name, in Oldgate, Morpeth, for more than 150 years.

Stannington church in line for top award

Churchgoers are celebrating after their beloved place of worship was judged among the top six in the country. St Mary's Church in Stannington, near Morpeth, has been chosen as one of the six finalists in a search by Country Life magazine for the village church of the year.

The church beat off competition from scores of others throughout the country and one of the things that impressed the judges was the way it had embraced the computer age.
