Northumberland residents dealing with family problems can now benefit from improved access to quality legal advice after DAWN Advice extended the reach of its Family Law service into the heart of Morpeth and Ashington.

The move, which has seen DAWN Advice's Family Law Team relocate from its Head Office in Seaton Burn, will help make it even easier for people to seek help on issues such as divorce, care work or domestic violence.

A northern debt advice service has backed calls by a Government committee to bring in tighter regulation of the payday loans industry.

The House of Commons' Business Committee says the UK needs to introduce much tighter control of 'harmful debt service products', such as payday loans, which it says target vulnerable people and encourages them into debt.

A northern advice service has urged the hundreds of North East Alcan workers left facing redundancy to seek advice as soon as possible.

It was revealed in March that rescue bids to keep Lynemouth's Rio Tinto Alcan aluminium smelter operational had failed and that it would close, with 323 workers given 12 weeks' redundancy notice and a further 192 workers facing likely redundancy in the long-term.

The DAWN Citizens Advice Bureau in Morpeth has unveiled new signage aimed at increasing its presence in the town - and announced plans to open for twice as long to cope with an increased demand for its services.

The Oldgate-based office has had a new roundel sign installed, thanks to donations from St George's Church and from Widdrington Village Parish Council. Valerie Coomber, from the Parish Council, and Ron Foster, Minister at St George's, were both on hand to unveil the new signage.

A popular Northumberland Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) expected to be inundated with requests for free debt advice throughout 2012 is looking for volunteers to help with demand.

The DAWN CAB in Morpeth, which has been a lifeline for thousands living in its surrounding communities since opening in 1974, is hoping to recruit volunteer advisers to support its general advice service.

A Northumberland debt advice expert is warning those left financially vulnerable by the festive season to use extreme caution when dealing with companies offering commercial debt management services or payday loans.

Liz Chadwick, Chief Executive of DAWN Advice, which offers free debt advice, warned that many could see their financial situation become even worse if debt problems are not managed correctly or if there is a delay in seeking help.

The Chief Executive of a telephone advice service is urging Northumbrians struggling with legal or financial problems to pick up the phone and join the 3,480 people who have already turned their lives around after contacting the county's dedicated advice line.

Launched in autumn 2010 the Northumberland Single Telephone Advice Line - which is operated by DAWN Advice - has dealt with nearly 3,500 enquiries from people living across the county who are worried about money or legal matters in its first year alone.

The situation at Rio Tinto Alcan took a turn for the worse last week with the company's
announcement last Wednesday. I met the joint trade union panel the following day and had a meeting scheduled with the management for Monday morning. I requested an urgent meeting with the Rt Hon Vince Cable MP, Secretary of State for Business Innovation and Skills, which will take place today, Wednesday.

I also requested an urgent meeting with the Rt Hon Chris Huhne MP, Secretary of State for Energy & Climate Change and am awaiting his response. I will continue to work with anybody and everybody to try and secure a future for the smelter and power station.

There's nothing wrong with an occasional bit of nostalgia - whether you long for the days when it was possible to enjoy a night out, and a taxi home, with less than five pounds in your pocket, or you just wish there were fewer cars on Morpeth high street again.

Of course, with nostalgia comes the temptation to believe that everything was better back then, whenever 'then' may have been - there was less crime, young people were better behaved, you could leave your front door unlocked...

It is certainly no secret how dependent Northumberland has become on the public sector - following the de-industrialisation of the late-1970s and 1980s many of the jobs which our county lost were replaced by positions created within the public sector.

With our traditional industries, such as shipbuilding and mining, almost all but gone, more and more Northumberland residents turned to the county council, local hospitals and other state-funded organisations for secure employment.
